Synopsis by Janiss Garza

Future flapper Colleen Moore -- in 1918 an up-and-coming young ingénue -- stars in this pictorialization of the poem by James Whitcomb Riley. After the death of her mother, Patience Thompson (Moore) grows up under the stern vigilance of her father, Jeff (Thomas Jefferson). A romance develops between the girl and John "the Hand" (Harry McCoy), the hired man on the Thompson farm. When John asks for Patience's hand in marriage, Jeff fires him and begins looking for a wealthy mate for his daughter. A rich old widower (Frank Hayes) makes his appearance, and Patience is less than thrilled. Her father, on the other hand, believes he would make the perfect mate for her. Desperate to avoid marrying the widower, Patience runs away with the help of a neighboring squire (Edward Robson) and his wife (Eugenie Besserer). The squire performs a wedding ceremony for Patience and John before her father can find her and drag her back home.
