Synopsis by Alice Day
The Valdez oil spill in Alaska was a devastating occurence that threatened the ecology of the region. In this program, a CBS 48 Hours film, the viewer is given a penetrating look into the oil and mineral industries in Alaska, and how their exploitation of native resources have affected the indigenous population. The more traditional aspects of the lives of Eskimos, Aleuts, and Inuits have undergone tremendous change during this period of industrial development. As the video indicates, this change is regarded as progressive, but it has brought disillusionment to much of the populace.
