A family is confronted with the cultural upheaval of a new decade and the economic disparity of their homeland in this film from Gabriele Salvatores, which incorporates elements of drama and documentary filmmaking. A narrator (Giuseppe Cederna) recalls the summer of 1959, as he was growing up with his beloved older brother Rosario in a small village in Southern Italy. While Rosario loves his hometown, there are few prospects for a young man with ambition, so he travels first to Naples and Milan, and then Rome, recounting his adventures in a series of letters back home. However, while the lights of the big city and the new visibility of European culture around the world makes it an exciting time for Rosario, his parents are outraged when he announces he no longer intends to marry Rosalba, the girl he promised to wed before he went away. Rosario's parents then set out to find their son, getting a first hand look at the sights up North that lured him away. 1960 is comprised primarily of archival footage and hit songs of the early 1960s, which provide an evocative portrait of what now seems like a golden age. 1960 was an official selection at the 2010 Venice Film Festival.
