Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

Although this drama by Taiwanese director Hu Wang is set in the early 1950s just after the Korean War and purports to be based on an actual incident, it also carries a clear political message. The action takes place in a POW camp in South Korea where many thousands of captured mainland Chinese soldiers have been interned. As the title suggests, up to 14,000 men are in the prison, all told. The prisoners are divided among themselves, arguing about whether or not to go back to Communist China. This debate fuels the action and is resolved with a unanimous decision in the end.
