Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Inspired by (but not a copy of) MTV's "countdown" series TRL, 106th and Park was one of the most popular attractions on cable's Black Entertainment Television network. Drawing its title from the locale of its East Harlem studios, the series was packaged by Kevin Lyles of Def Jam records. Hosted by rappers AJ and Free, the program entreated its viewers to phone, mail, or e-mail their requests, whereupon the ten most-requested tunes would be presented in music-video form. Distinguished by an unending parade of rap, R&B, and hip-hop guest stars, 106th and Park was telecast weeknights at six p.m. beginning in September 2000.
