Biography by AllMovie

Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Vera Blasi moved with her mother and stepfather to New York at age 11. She later relocated to San Francisco, attended the College of Notre Dame in Belmont, CA, and earned a degree in French Literature. Blasi found through a weekend screenwriting workshop that the craft blended artistic disciplines she had studied and enjoyed in her childhood, inspiring her to apply for a residency at the American Film Institute. During her last year at AFI, she wrote the sensual romantic comedy Woman on Top (2000). Shortly after completion, the screenplay was optioned by Fox Searchlight, which initially developed the script as a starring vehicle for actor Geena Davis. Woman on Top (2000) became Blasi's first produced screenplay and ultimately starred Penelope Cruz. Although it was rewritten by June Roberts, which greatly disappointed Blasi, the first draft was restored when director Fina Torres signed on to the project. Blasi also wrote the film's tie-in cookbook, published by HarperCollins, that included the film's recipes and formulas for seductive magic spells. Her second project, the American remake of Ang Lee's Eat, Drink, Man, Woman (1994) for Samuel Goldwyn Co., was renamed Tortilla Soup (2001). Blasi converted the original Taiwanese setting of the film to a Latino cast, setting, and story line.
