A popular comedian with the pioneer Vitagraph company prior to World War I, Wally Van (born Wallace Van Nostrand) later became a director of some note, remembered for helming the 1914 parody of action serials, The Fates and Flora Fourflush. Van, who earlier in his career had billed himself a "society entertainer," had been the director of college plays and appeared in various stock companies prior to entering films with Vitagraph in 1911. He became a star opposite dimpled Lillian Walker in the Cutey comedies (released from 1913 to 1915) and was made a director in 1914. Mostly helming potboilers, many of which he also appeared in, Van continued in films until at least 1925.
