Biography by AllMovie

Veteran cinematographer Sid Hickox kicked off his career at age twenty, as an assistant cameraman at New York's Biograph studios. A year later, Hickox was promoted to full director of photography on Gloria's Romance (1916), a serial starring Billie Burke. During World War I, he served as one of the chief photographers for the Navy Air Service. Back in Hollywood, Hickox joined the staff of First National Pictures. When that studio was absorbed by Warner Bros. in 1928, Hickox became a Warners employee, remaining so until his retirement in 1955. Sid Hickox's hundreds of film credits include The Last Flight (1931), A Slight Case of Murder (1938), Gentleman Jim (1942), Edgar of Darkness (1943), To Have and Have Not (1944), The Horn Blows at Midnight (1945), The Big Sleep (1945), Dark Passage (1947; a rare Hollywood example of the "first-person camera" technique), White Heat (1959), Them! (1954) and Battle Cry (1955).
