Movie Spotlight

Blade Runner (1982)

As Denis Villeneuve's sequel arrives, the moment is right to revisit Ridley Scott's pioneering and much-debated sci-fi noir masterpiece. The movie showed a future that wasn't all slick starships and sterilized environments, but a decaying, imploding representation of the limits of a consumer-driven culture, where freedom itself is a commodity.

Desperate for his daughter to escape Romania, a small-town doctor is hyper-focused on an exam that could be her ticket to a better life. When she is attacked on the way to take the test, he pulls every string he knows how to give her another chance, eventually resorting to extra-legal measures that threaten to be exposed at any moment. Cristian Mungiu's previous films include the unforgettable 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and the haunting Beyond the Hills, and Graduation is no less intense. (Available on Netflix)
