Prior to becoming a screenwriter and film director in 1971, Ottokar Runze spent his entire career acting and free-lance directing in German theater. Between 1947 and 1950, he acted at the Deutsches Theater, and from 195--56 he directed the British Centre's Berlin theater. He went free-lance until 1968 when he began producing independent films.
