A former medical doctor, director Michael Verhoeven uses his films to unearth political scandals from history. In the U.S. he is best known for the film Das Schreckliche Maedchen/The Nasty Girl (1990), a gripping account of a young girl's investigation into her home village's scandalous collusion with the Nazis during WWII.
