  • Forayed into directing after he missed his boat to Java in 1938 and director Carlos Vander Tolosa hired him as an assistant director for Giliw Ko (1939).
  • In 1940, started directing films for LVN Pictures at age 25.
  • Established his production company, MC Productions, in 1947.
  • Directed and acted as the protagonist in Genghis Khan (1950), one of the classics of Filipino cinema, which went on to become the first Filipino movie ever to be invited to the Venice Film Festival in 1952; was screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 1953; was dubbed in 16 languages and released around the world.
  • Had plans to direct an action film with Hollywood actor Anthony Quinn in the 1950s but the project got shelved.
  • In 2009, was declared a National Artist for his contribution to Philippine cinema.
  • Was quoted as saying that his genius was born out of necessity and lack of money.
