American producer Kenneth MacGowan started out his career as a drama critic, and later as a stage producer with Eugene O'Neill's Provincetown Playhouse. Following that, he moved to Hollywood to become a story editor for RKO; by 1932, MacGowan had become a producer for RKO, and other studios. Though he was behind many prestigious films, he was usually only credited as an associate producer. In 1946, he retired from the industry to chair the Department of Theater Arts at UCLA. Later he wrote books on drama and film, most notably Behind the Screen, a history of cinema.
