Biography by AllMovie

A major vaudeville star famous for her male impersonations, Kathleen Clifford was at one point humorously billed as "The Smartest Chap in Town." A Broadway headliner in such hit plays as The Winsome Widow and The Heart of a Child, Clifford made her screen debut in Who Is Number One? (1917), a serial in 19 episodes produced in Long Beach, CA. Clifford remained in Long Beach for the melodrama Angel Child (1918) and later played Queen Berengaria to Wallace Beery's Richard the Lionhearted (1923). But she was never truly comfortable in Hollywood and would find herself reduced to minor roles by the mid-'20s. Remarkably, Clifford's gift for impersonations, which had made her a household name in the first place, was never utilized on screen.
