A rotund, jolly-looking character actor long under contract to 20th Century Fox, Joseph J. Greene played Chief Justice White in that studio's monumental screen biography Wilson (1944), the sheriff in the Hopalong Cassidy Western The Devil's Playground (1946), and Santa Claus in The Bishop's Wife (1947). Greene continued to play bit parts through the 1950s, when he also appeared on such television shows as Adventures of Wild Bill Hickock and Wanted Dead or Alive.
