Initially hailed as the next great Garbo upon her arrival in Hollywood, actress/musician Jeanne Sorel may never have achieved quite that level of fame, but her legacy in the entertainment industry continued to thrive long after her onscreen career had faded. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1913, Sorel lived in London and New York City before settling in Hollywood and being signed to a film contract by Samuel Goldwyn. She was a talented artist and musician whose onscreen career proved immensely promising, however, fate would prove to have something entirely different in store for the burgeoning actress, as she instead opted for a career as a homemaker. Despite her abandonment of a screen career early in life, Sorel would later rekindle her love of acting in founding L.A.'s Oxford Theater, where she would teach acting and perform frequently. Sorel's film work included American Madness (1932) and B.S. I Love You, and her television work included roles in The Monkees and Bewitched. Married to film producer Albert J. Cohen, Sorel was also mother to actress Louise Sorel. In late January of 2003, Jeanne Sorel died in Los Angeles, CA. She was 89.
