Director Gaylene Preston is one of the more successful New Zealand women in films. Her films are notable for their strong messages. In addition to the occaisional feature film, Preston also makes advertisements and documentaries. The latter are usually highly creative examinations of young people, especially those with some kind of handicap. Originally an art therapist, Preston's first film, Mr. Wrong (1985) was a thriller, notable for its humor and clever camerawork.
