- At age 14, he was a radio commentator for minor-league baseball and football games in Charlotte, NC; that same year, he won the American Legion "Voice of Democracy" essay contest, which earned him a trip to Washington, D.C., to meet President Harry Truman. His entry was read on CBS radio by Edward R. Murrow.
- Won a 1956 Ernie Pyle Memorial Award for the human-interest columns he wrote for the Charlotte News.
- Joined CBS News as a writer in 1957 at age 22; two years later, he was promoted and became the network's youngest correspondent ever.
