  • Aged 8, joined the Wharfedale Naturalists Society and stared growing plants in his back garden.
  • Left school age 15 to work as an apprentice gardener in the Ilkley Council Parks Department Nursery; later went on to study for a Diploma in Horticulture at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
  • Presented BBC's coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show every year from 1983 to 2013; in 2014 he was replaced by Sophie Raworth.
  • Published his first novel, Only Dad, in November 2001.
  • Has presented the Sunday morning show on Classic FM since January 2012.
  • Has received many awards, including an MBE for services to horticulture and broadcasting (2010), the Royal Horticultural Society's Victoria Medal of Honour (2004) and Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Hampshire (2001).
  • Founder of the Alan Titchmarsh's Gardens for Schools charity, which provides grants to primary schools for gardens and nature areas.
