Synopsis by Janiss Garza
It's ironic that for his first starring role, matinee idol John Gilbert played a crippled hunchback, "Crip" Halloran. Crip, the son of the town drunk, is in love with Fay Herron (Enid Bennett, also in her first starring screen role). Fay is a blind girl who lives purely in her imagination, where she's a princess and Crip is her prince. The pair spend a lot of time in an old mine conjuring up her fantasies. But the day comes when Fay has an operation to restore her sight. She asks that Crip -- her prince -- be the first person she sees. When he is revealed as the sad, misshapen character he is, Fay's fantasies are destroyed, and Crip, brokenhearted, slinks off to the old mine and dies.
