A type of adventure where the action takes place in imaginary lands with strange beasts and elemental magic. These films contain many of the elements of the sword-and-sorcery film, but are not necessarily bound to the conventions of the sword and magic. Stories about Atlantis and other mythological lands are popular. In the '50s, a common theme was the journey into another time, usually by underground passage, as in Journey to the Center of the Earth. Jules Verne's book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the template for a fantasy adventure under the sea. Gulliver's Travels is also one of the favored pieces of literature that has been adapted for this subgenre repeatedly. In the 2000s, Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R Tolkien's celebrated Lord of the Rings series was met with much success.
