A grandfather (Huang Zonglo) lives with his son (Wang Xuen) and daughter-in-law (Zu Ling) in this social drama set in modern Beiging, China. The son teaches Army officers a class entitled "Hostilities Of The Future," while his wife is an opera singer rehearsing for Madame Butterfly after their son is sent to school. Feeling the end is near, the old man tries to tell his family the story of his life as a young man, but they are too busy to listen. The grandfather finally takes a train to find the nurse he loved during the war, and in a series of flashbacks, the trip opens a flood of memories for the old man.
