Synopsis by Cecilia Cygnar

This series from the History Channel explores some of the most dangerous and deadly natural disasters of all time, including this episode on landslides and how much destruction they leave in their paths. First, there is a look back at an accident in Wales. In 1966, a small Welsh mining town was devastated after a pile of mining by-products slid down a hill and buried an entire school. Over 140 people were killed, most of whom were children. The National Coal Board in Wales could have prevented that accident, but did prevent this from ever happening again, by outlawing piles of mining by-products. Then, there is a look at the series of landslides that plagued Northern California in 1982. After a record amount of rain fell in the San Francisco Bay area, over 18,000 landslides were reported. One survivor talks about how she was sitting on her sofa one minute and the next minute, mud and debris were filling her home.
