This episode of the History Channel series Wrath of God explores the dangers of mining and looks at some of the most notorious and deadly mining disasters in history. There are looks at accidents in both coal mines and gold mines. Coal mines are extremely dangerous because of the presence of methane gas, but gold mines can be just as deadly. A 1907 coal mine explosion in West Virginia left 175 men and boys killed and caused shock waves to be felt miles away from the mine. A coal mine accident in West Frankfort, IL, killed 119 miners and in South Africa, a gold mine exploded after a welder accidentally touched his torch to an acetylene cylinder, causing an explosion that killed 177 miners. Survivors of these three disasters talk about their experiences and experts talk about how new mining techniques are trying to limit these types of tragic accidents.
