At a time when few women attempted such daring exploits, Beryl Markham made the first solo flight from London to New York, nine years after Lindbergh's historic Atlantic flight. Her contemporaries were Isak Dinesen of Out of Africa fame, Dinesen's husband, Baron Bror Blixen, and Denys Finch Hatton.
