Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

Women in Arms documents the role of women in overthrowing the Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza in 1979. Somoza was the notorious head of an oppressive regime that tortured and killed with impunity. The Sandinista rebels who fought him had a large female contingent that was essential to the long years of both underground fighting and then open civil war. Female guerrilla leaders, as well as old and young women from the lowest echelons were interviewed about their wartime activities, such as making bombs and participating in combat missions. Even their male counterparts praised their courage in the face of torture and death, and their willingness to continue fighting against all odds to end the inhumanity of the dictatorship.
