In this film -- adapted from a play by Pierre Louys and Pierre Frandaie -- Geraldine Farrar (who set the standard for silent Latin heroines in Carmen) plays Concha, a passionate but pure Spanish cigarette girl. Even though he already has a mistress, the lusty and rich Don Mateo (Lou Tellegen, Farrar's real-life husband) decides that he must have her. But Concha swears that she cannot be bought by wealth, even after Don Mateo pays her mother (Rose Dione) to allow him to set her daughter up in an apartment. Concha promises to move in the next day, but instead she runs off to sing in a sleazy cabaret. Nevertheless, Don Mateo chases after her, but he finally gets fed up with her antics and slaps her resoundingly across the face. This apparently does the trick, because Concha immediately turns from tiger to pussy cat and melts into his arms.
