Synopsis by Nathan Southern

Issued by Tabu Recordings in the wake of Terje "Valfar" Bakken's strange and tragic death on January 14, 2004, Sognamental demonstrates that Valfar's late additions to his one man metal band - musicians Stian "Strom" Bakketeig, Sture Dingsøyr, Gaute "Righ" Refsnes and Jarle "Hvall" Kväle - kept the group alive and pulsating up through its final days. The band's unique, visceral and challenging blend of black metal rock and Scandinavian folk music attains a new visual dimension here, its first and only live concert performance available for home viewing, and its final performance before the group disbanded. Recorded live at Rockefeller Palace in Oslo on September 3, 2004, as a tribute to Valfar, Dingsøyr handles the majority of vocals, with Cosmocrator and Valfar's brother, Vegard Bakken, lending a hand. The DVD incorporates live footage from 1996's Gaupne, 2001's Sogndal, and the 2002 Infernofestival in Oslo. It also works in backstage footage and an interview with Valfar taken from Norwegian television.
