Synopsis by Nathan Southern
Avant-garde director Lynne Sachs directed this experimental opus, inspired by the short stories of magic realist Argentine writer Julio Cortázar. Though nominally a story of four Buenos Aires girls discovering themselves via a shared fascination with the trains that run by their house, Sachs only uses this as a jumping off point, for a broader and more cerebral exploration of such themes as teenage angst and disillusionment. She also conveys the Argentine sociopolitical unrest that lingers constantly in the background. Sachs shot the film using a combination of 8mm, 16mm and video.
