Synopsis by Mark Deming

Five people with little to look forward to take out their rage on an innocent man in this drama inspired by a true story. Weltstadt is a town in East Germany that was once a popular vacation spot, but has fallen on hard times since reunification. Near the end of summer, five aimless people without much in the way of a future are wandering the streets, looking for something to do. Heinrich (Hendrik Arnst), the oldest of the group, used to sell sausages and snacks to the street traffic, but a lack of sales and the construction of a new parking structure have put him out of business. Twenty-something Karsten (Gerdy Zint) has just gotten out of jail and is looking for a job he hasn't been able to find. Karsten's good friend Till (Florian Batholomai) was an apprentice to a house painter, but he just got laid off and isn't sure what to do. Till is thinking of leaving town, but his girlfriend Steffi (Karoline Schuch) still wants to find work as a hairdresser, even though prospects are slim. Frustrations, dashed hopes and the knowledge that the future isn't likely to get better leads these five friends into an act of shocking violence. The first feature film from writer and director Christian Klandt, Weltstadt received its North American premiere at the 2008 Montreal World Film Festival.
