Michael Thomas scripted this adaptation of Douglas Kennedy's novel The Dead Heart. After a Manhattan shoot-out, Teddy (Jonathan Schaech) is seen in the Australian outback where he gives a lift to blonde Angie (Susie Porter). After sex, she knocks Teddy unconscious, kidnaps him, and takes him to her native town, Woop Woop, where dog food is made from kangaroos. The beer-guzzling, redneck locals have a fondness for Rodgers and Hammerstein movies and music. Teddy becomes Angie's sex slave and is threatened by her father (Rod Taylor) to forget about any attempts to leave. He finds an ally in Angie's sister, Krystal, and makes plans to escape, even though the town is surrounded on all sides by large rocks. The film's score includes several Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes. This Australian-British film was shown out of competition as a work-in-progress at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.
