Synopsis by Tom Ciampoli
The careers of four current human rights activists are profiled through the lens of the lawyer who has made their work possible in this cultural documentary film. Watchers of the Sky profiles the life and career of lawyer Raphael Lemkin, who created the term "genocide" and later founded the Genocide Convention which began taking place in conjunction the United Nations beginning in 1948. In addition, the work of four current activists whose accomplishments have made possible by Lemkin's efforts is chronicled. The group includes U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power, Benjamin B. Ferencz (chief prosecutor in the Einsatzgruppen trial at Nuremberg), Luis Moreno Ocampo, the first Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, and Emmanuel Uwurukundo, who is the head of operations for U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in the War in Darfur's refugee camps in Chad.
