synopsis
Pratiba Parmar is best-known as one of the central figures in the British independent media movement and as an exceptional documentary filmmaker. Warrior Marks is her sixth and most controversial film. A poetic and political film about female genital mutilation. Produced by Alice Walker, the film portrays the cultural and political complexities around an issue that affects one hundred million women. The film intercuts interviews with women affected by genital mutilation with Walker's reflections. This call and response form paves the way for the introduction of difficult material to general audiences who are probably less than familiar with the practices of female circumcision.
