In this innovative video, viewers see World War II through the eyes of combat veterans and others who tell in their own words of the events that changed history and their own lives. "This is the war, the experience, in which we became men..." are the words of one veteran, who characterizes the feeling of the men who went off to serve their country as youths, but returned with eyes that had seen too much. There is plenty of newsreel and combat footage, with narration by Edwin Newman and music by Jon Carroll, but the riveting first-person reminiscences by the men who fought the war are what make the film unique.
