A teacher's forbidden love for the depressive daughter of a Mafioso starts out with romance and humor, but ultimately leads to tragedy. While waiting for his writing career to blossom, Oscar teaches. One day, crime boss Karel Kral invites him to his bordello and there asks Oscar to tutor his daughter Beata. She is initially a sullen sort, but eventually Oscar brings her out of her funk. When Oscar's wife and daughter go on vacation, he and Beata become passionate lovers. Later, he helps get her a teaching job where he works. The relationship comes crashing down, when the newly confident and self-centered Beata abruptly drops him, starts dating others and becomes involved in various social causes.
