Robert Edeson repeated his stage role of Haulick Smagg in this 5-reel Edison adaptation of Gellett Burgess' play The Cave Man. The plot is galvanized by a playful society girl named Madeline Mischief (Fay Wallace), who leaves half of a $50 bill on the street. A note attached to the bill lists Madeline's address, along with the promise of the other half. Burly delivery man Haulick Smagg arrives at the doorstep of Madeline's posh penthouse apartment with the torn bill in hand. Feeling particularly capricious, Madeline passes Smagg off as a "nutty professor" to her society chums. Thus, his rude-and-crude behavior is dismissed as mere eccentricity. Falling in love with Smagg, Madeline reveals the truth about him, whereupon he is ejected from her apartment by her outraged friends. But Madeline races after Smagg and begs forgiveness, which by now he is more than willing to extend. The Cave Man was remade with Matt Moore and Marie Prevost in 1926.
