Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Originally released in 1938 as The Great Dawn and The Great Glow, They Wanted Peace was directed by Mikhail Chiaureli, one of the most conspicuous purveyers of the 1ate-1930s "Stalin personality cult". Not surprisingly, Stalin (played by M. Gelovani) is among the heroes of this patriotic drama, which likens the activities of the Nazis to the Royalist forces during the Romanoff regime. Continually beaten down, trodden upon, and slaughtered en masse, the Russian serfs eventually rebel against their oppressors, with such visionaries as Lenin and Stalin leading the way. Conspicuous by their absence are Trotsky and Kerensky, who were regarded as "non-persons" in 1938 (Trotsky in fact would be non-living by the time this film was released in the US!) They Wanted Peace was briefly removed from release in the USSR in 1939 and 1940, inasmuch as the Soviets were then pursuing a policy of nonaggresion with the Germans.
