Synopsis by Janiss Garza

This picture, starring one of film's female pioneers, Nell Shipman, was based on James Oliver Curwood's novel. Made long before Rin Tin Tin or even Strongheart, it was considered unusual because it featured a dog (uncredited) in one of the leading roles. After killing the man who murdered his father, Jim Carvel (Alfred Whitman) escapes to the Northwest where he becomes a fur trader. The factor of the trading post is the brutal McTaggart (Al E. Garcia), who has tired of his Indian lover. He sets his sights on Marie (Shipman), the daughter of Pierre, a trapper (Joe Rickson). McTaggart gets Pierre away from his cabin so he can sneak in and attack Marie. The old man, suspecting foul play, returns and McTaggart kills him. The factor claims that Carvel is responsible for the murder and sets a group of Indians on his trail. De Bar, a half-breed, comes to his rescue, while Marie's loyal dog, Baree, metes out a vicious justice to McTaggart. Baree, Son of Kazan would be remade starring Anita Stewart in 1925.
