Synopsis by Mark Deming

A police officer's attempt to do the right thing in a difficult situation goes horribly wrong and sends his life hurtling towards disaster in this independent drama from India. Michael (Naseeruddin Shah) is a single father looking after his young son. He's also cop who has been assigned to serve as security at a political protest, and when his superiors order him to fire into the crowd, he tries to shoot at a low angle that would keep him from firing a fatal round. However, Michael's shot accidentally kills a twelve-year-old boy, and he's wracked with guilt over this turn of events. Michael is drummed out of the police force and takes a job as a movie projectionist to keep himself afloat. The job doesn't pay well, and Michael soon begins working with a gang of video pirates, while the father of the boy he killed badgers him with telephone calls, threatening the life of his boy and sending him into a deeper cycle of depression and panic. Michael was the first feature film from director Ribhu Dasgupta.
