Synopsis by Mark Deming

A boy makes friends with a strange, misunderstood beast in this animated fantasy from Denmark. Twelve-year-old Jonathan (voice of Markus Rygaard) is excited to be spending the summer with his grandfather (voice of Elith Nykjaer) out in the country, but he's not so pleased that his little sister Sophie) (voice of Alberte Blichfeldt) is tagging along, and he often taunts her with stories of the strange creatures that lurk in the woods. Grandfather is happy to see the youngsters, but makes it very clear that under no circumstances are they ever to set foot in the nearby forest. Jonathan follows Grandfather's orders, but when Sophie runs into the woods, he follows her in order to bring her back, and he makes a remarkable discovery -- local legend has it that a bear the size of a hill lives in the woods, and Jonathan sees the massive beast for itself. Grandfather and a handful of local hunters set out to kill the monster, but when Jonathan learns the big bear is actually friendly and only wants to be left alone, he tries to foil the plans for the big hunt. Den Kaempestore Bjorn (aka The Great Bear) was an official selection at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival.
