Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Barbie, the glamorous teenaged doll introduced to the toy market by Mattel in 1959, was recreated in animated form in this syndicated special. Clearly banking on the popularity of the weekly cartoon series Jem, this half-hour epic finds Barbie fronting a soft-rock group with her friends Dana, Diva, Derek, and (of course) Ken. Boldly going where no singer has gone before, Barbie arranges for her "Rockers" to stage a concert in outer space -- only to encounter a great deal of difficulty returning to Earth. When they finally make back home, the Rockers discover that they've gone back in time from the 1980s to the 1950s. Originally distributed by DIC Enterprises in the fall of 1987, Barbie and the Rockers: Out of This World was supposed to have been the pilot for a Monday-Friday Barbie cartoon series. Unfortunately, negotiations between DIC and Mattel fell through, and the project eventually emerged with a whole new set of characters -- and the sponsorship of Mattel rival Hasbro -- as Maxie's World in 1988.
