Synopsis by Steve Blackburn

The irony of the May 6th, 1937, Hindenburg catastrophe is that despite the horrific image of the zeppelin in flames, the great majority of passengers survived. Only 37 passengers out of about 100 passengers and crew died, a decent survival rate compared to most modern jet crashes. Yet the incident ended rigid frame airships as a major form of transport. Originally televised on A&E, this documentary about the pride of Nazi Germany covers all aspects of the most famous dirigible in history, from a profile of its creator, Count Ferdinand von Zepplin, to the construction of the magnificent, flying luxury liner and various theories on why the airship burst into flames. Highlights include archival footage not just of the disaster, but also of the grand and lavish first class quarters. Also included is commentary by historians and interviews with survivors and eyewitnesses.
