In this drama, following the retreat of the Germans from Stalingrad, a deserter is sentenced to die. A pastor speaks to the condemned man and learns that the man deserted to protect a Russian widow who was being threatened from both sides. Still, despite the pastor's best efforts, he cannot save the man from execution.
