Synopsis by Hal Erickson

The second of matinee idol Lou Tellegen's starring vehicles for Paramount was the five-reel The Unknown. Based on I.A.R. Weylie's novel The Red Mirage, the film is a Foreign Legion yarn, set in North Africa. Running away from himself, aristocratic Richard Farquahr (Tellegen) joins the Legion, where he is subjected to the sadistic excesses of Captain "Devil" Destinn (Theodore Roberts). Both men vie for the affections of heroine Nancy Preston (Dorothy Davenport), a rivalry that results in an inordinate amount of physical abuse heaped upon Farquahr. All problems are resolved during the requisite native attack upon the Legion outpost. Highlighting this average subject was a "kootch" dance, performed by an uncredited but very sexy exotic dancer.
