This uneventful film of romance in the slow lane uses a technique tried elsewhere with varying degrees of success -- the action is seen through the eyes of the narrator, also a player in the drama. Set in North Africa, an introspective, slightly self-absorbed journalist asks a French woman to share a room with him. He is attracted to her but is not sure how to go about making that point clear. They spend their time in banal conversation, and being French, they smoke a lot of cigarettes while they talk. They see an Australian movie and then decide to make their way across the desert to Alexandria.
