Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Based on a play by Louis Anspacher, The Unchastened Woman starred Elsie Ferguson as the title character, aka Grace Valentine. The already confusing plotline was rendered even more so on screen, but basically the story concerned the drastic measures taken by the heroine to get even with her philandering husband. Relocating to Europe, Grace quickly gains a reputation as a "femme fatale," driving her husband mad with jealousy. Only the birth of the Valentines' baby reawakens Grace to her wifely duties and convinces her husband that he was just as much at fault for her scandalous behavior as she. Old-fashioned even by 1918 standards, The Unchastened Woman hadn't improved with age when it was remade as Theda Bara's "comeback" picture in 1925.
