Because of his political ambitions, John Radford (Alexander Gaden) neglects his ward, Constance Turner (Mary Nash). Constance resents this, and becomes entangled with Walter Dover, the son of a political boss. Walter tricks her into a mock marriage, and when his father finds out, he sends Walter abroad and has Constance falsely jailed on a burglary charge. Meanwhile, Radford is elected governor with the help of the senior Dover. Against the politico's wishes, he pardons Constance. When Radford seeks re-election, Constance meets another politician, Charles Garvan (Arthur Morrison), who offers to help, providing she become his mistress. She refuses at first, but when it looks like Radford is going to lose, she has second thoughts. Radford is nominated, but before Garvan can hold Constance to her end of the deal, he realizes that he really loves her, and offers marriage instead.
