Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
In Estonia, in 1925, revolution, counterrevolution and harsh measures were facts of everyday life. At the time, Estonia was independent from the Soviet Union. In this story, Anton is a Soviet agent in "bourgeois" Estonia. He is exposed to betrayals, double-crosses, torture, and phony trials, either for himself or for those he knows. The title means that you can only know the extent of the loss one suffers in death by asking the dead. This film received a Grand Prize at the All-Union Film Festival.
