Synopsis by Mark Deming

In this documentary from filmmaker Peter Schreiner, we meet Antonio Cotroneo, known to his friends as "Toto." Cotroneo was born in the Southern Italian region of Calabria, but as a young man he grew restless and wanted to move on to a place that held more promise for him. Cotroneo eventually settled in Vienna, where he fell in love, got married and has been living for three decades, working in a ticket office. But now that Cotroneo is well into middle age, he's become nostalgic for the home he left behind and often finds himself wondering what's become his neighborhood in Calabria. Cotroneo decided to return to Italy and find out, and Schreiner and his camera crew tagged along; Toto is a portrait of a man exploring his past as well as contemplating the two cultures, languages and ways of life that have come to define him. Toto was an official selection at the 2009 Venice International Film Festival.
