Synopsis
Recalling Hideki Tojo, Japan's prime minister for most of WWII. "The Allies blamed him for starting the war," says narrator Will Lyman; "Japanese blamed him for losing it." This biography includes an interview with a Tojo granddaughter who wrote a book sympathetic to him; and footage from the 1946-48 Tokyo war-crimes tribunal that sentenced him to death (he was hanged in December 1948). Tojo believed the war to be a "holy crusade," says Lyman. But "it was a patch of glorious self-destruction."
